Mr. Carpenter grew up in Thomasville, North Carolina. There he played sports, was in the Boy Scouts, and obtained his Eagle Scout award. In 1987, he graduated from high school.

In 1991, Mr. Carpenter graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Political Science. Before graduation, Mr. Carpenter made the Dean's List several times and was a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha honors society. While in law school, Mr. Carpenter worked as a legal intern at the Attorney General's Office for the State of North Carolina in Raleigh NC. In 1995, Mr. Carpenter graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law with a J.D. Mr. Carpenter also made the Dean's List in law school.

After his graduation and bar exam, Mr. Carpenter worked for a large civil law office. In 1997, Mr. Carpenter began practicing law in the triad area of North Carolina while concentrating in criminal law and motor vehicle defense. During this time, Mr. Carpenter decided that concentrating on one area of law would improve proficiency in that area.
In 1997, Mr. Carpenter began work in a high volume criminal defense law office and was heavily involved in representing clients in Criminal District and Superior Court. Mr. Carpenter represented clients charged with everything from traffic tickets to litigation. During the same time, he also represented clients in cases before the North Carolina Court of Appeals as well as for Motions for Appropriate Relief throughout all levels of state court.

While representing clients charged with motor vehicle offenses, Mr. Carpenter has also had plenty of experience with the state Department of Motor Vehicles and the department's hearing officers. Mr. Carpenter has frequently appeared before hearing officers for DWI-related cases and for restoration hearings when clients have lost the privilege to drive in the state of North Carolina.
Mr. Carpenter has been happily married for fifteen years. He is the proud father of a son and daughter. His interests include skiing, college basketball, and travel.
